Four steps

Minki plans when each card comes back: hard ones sooner, easy ones later. But no app can do the remembering for you. And it's allowed to feel like effort. That effort is what makes it stick.

It works best like this, card by card:

  1. Look at the question. Don't reveal it yet.
  2. Write the answer on paper by hand.
  3. Say the answer out loud.
  4. Tap Show answer, compare it with the paper, and rate honestly: Again, Good or Easy.

Again isn't failing. It just means this card comes back soon. Rating too generously means tricky cards show up too rarely.

Ten minutes every day beats an hour before the test. Just keep a pen and paper next to the tablet.

Recall the answer

Recall the answer is the default. You see the question, think of the answer, tap Show answer, and rate yourself with Again, Good or Easy. With paper and a pen, this is the stronger option, because you commit to an answer and check it honestly.

Type the answer

With Type the answer, you type into the box and Minki checks it. Upper and lower case and extra spaces don't matter, but every letter and punctuation mark does. If the answer is wrong, Minki shows the differences and rates the card Again automatically. If it's right, you choose between Good and Easy. Open the deck's actions menu (…), choose Learning defaults, and look for How to practise.
